Boulder is known as a hotbed of Mid-Century Modern architecture.  The Table Mesa area developed around the national research labs, NIST, NCAR and NOAA.  These buildings are all very innovative and their influence extended to the design of homes, schools and churches in the area.
Historic Boulder Inc. will lead a guided tour of a neighborhood of great modern homes on Saturday May 18th from 1:30 to 3:00.  Designers featured include, Wagener, Papachristou and Wells.  The houses on the tour were mainly designed by the builders who went well beyond the typical ‘cookie-cutter’ suburban prototype to be experimental in shapes, materials and attitude.
This is the kickoff to a new self-guided tour on a free App you should download called PocketSights that includes many wonderful modern buildings in south Boulder.

Architect Leonard Segel is the Executive Director of Historic Boulder.  He is a founding board member of the Modern Architecture Preservation League of Colorado, coauthor of “Historic Context and Survey of Modern Architecture in Boulder,” and founding board member of the Colorado Chapter of DOCOMOMO. Just for fun he likes to look at and talk about great design.
